”Given the number and lavish quality of the photographic plates in this work one could almost be forgiven for regarding it, at least on first glance, as a coffee-table publication. However, there is also a scientific content - and one that is of equally high content.” Entomologist’s Rec. J. Var., Vol 115 part 6: 295-296.

“In short, if you are interested in the butterflies of the Mediterranean, you should order this book immediately. Particularly when you consider all this is available for less than £30! The endemics are not illustrated in Tolman and Lewington’s Collins Field Guide to Butterflies of Britain and Europe, so if you are thinking of visiting Cyprus, this book is essential.” Bull. amat. Ent. Soc., Vol. 62, No. 449: 168-169.

(I have no financial interest in sales of this book; commercial details are included to assist potential purchasers.)

INSIGHT TRAVEL MAP

Of the commercially available tourist maps, the best I have found to date is the Insight Travel Map 1:200,000, (published 27 June 2003) but this does not show UTM grids (nor does it show that the new A3 motorway now extends east to Ayia Napa). For details, view the company’s web site: www.insightguides.com and enter ‘Cyprus’ in the top search field: “Find titles on.....”. The Travel Map provides better overall detail and is easier in use, however, the Flexi Map is laminated, allowing routes to be planned by annotating with a non-permanent marker pen. Again, this map does not show UTM grids.
Please
contact me if you have found a better and more up-to-date map.

Maps

Unfortunately, there are no commercially available maps showing UTM 5 km square or 10 km square grids. However, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation has responded favourably to my request for their free-of-charge map ‘A Visitor’s Map of Cyprus’, (scale 1:350,000), to be reprinted to include UTM 10 km grid squares (WGS84). The map was kindly prepared by the Department of Lands and Surveys, Lefkosia and I am very grateful to CTO and DLS for producing a map which will be of much benefit to recorders.

This new map, is dated June 2006 and is available without charge from Cyprus Tourism Organisation offices throughout the world. The revised map was despatched to CTO offices during September, but as there may be old stocks of the similarly named original map (which, unfortunately, is also dated June 2006), please specify that you require the new version showing the grids when requesting a copy. Although the CTO map shows 10 km grid squares, they are not clearly numbered so potential recorders may care to contact me for a copy of my own computer-prepared map to enable easy annotation of the CTO version.
